Frank Curran (politician)

Frank Curran (1907 – December 11, 1981) was an American politician who served as the 35th Mayor of San Diego, California, from 1963 to 1971.

Curran was a member of the Democratic Party. Prior to becoming mayor, he served on the San Diego City Council for several years. His mayoral tenure was marked by significant urban development and infrastructure projects in San Diego, including the expansion of the San Diego International Airport and improvements to the city's freeway system. He also oversaw the early stages of development of Mission Bay Park.

One of the key issues during Curran's administration was managing the city's rapid population growth. He focused on addressing issues related to water supply, transportation, and housing. Curran faced challenges balancing development with environmental concerns and preserving the quality of life for San Diego residents.

Curran's political career ended in controversy. In 1970, he was indicted and later convicted of bribery and conspiracy in connection with a taxicab franchise. He was sentenced to prison but served a reduced sentence. This scandal significantly damaged his reputation and legacy.

Following his time in office, Curran remained a figure of public interest in San Diego due to the circumstances surrounding his departure from the mayoralty. He died in December 1981.
