Fidenza

Fidenza is a town and comune in the province of Parma, Emilia-Romagna, Italy. It is located about 110 kilometers (68 miles) northwest of Bologna and about 20 kilometers (12 miles) northwest of Parma.

History:

Originally known as Borgo San Donnino, Fidenza owes its origins to the Via Emilia, the Roman road that connected Piacenza to Rimini. In Roman times, a mansio (roadside station) called Fidentia stood near the current location of the town. This name was later revived. The town developed around the relics of Saint Donnino, a martyr beheaded in 304 AD, and became an important religious center during the Middle Ages. The Via Francigena, the ancient pilgrimage route to Rome, passed through Borgo San Donnino, further contributing to its growth.

The town was controlled by various powerful families and entities over the centuries, including the Pallavicino and Visconti families, and was eventually incorporated into the Duchy of Parma. The name was officially changed from Borgo San Donnino to Fidenza in 1927.

Geography:

Fidenza lies in the Pianura Padana, the Po Valley. It is a relatively flat area, typical of this region of northern Italy. The town is situated near the Stirone River.

Fidenza's economy is based on agriculture, industry, and commerce. The surrounding area is known for its agricultural production, particularly Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese and other food products. The town also has a manufacturing sector, with businesses involved in various industries.
