Endless Night (novel)

Endless Night is a mystery novel by Agatha Christie, first published in 1967. The story is narrated by Michael Rogers, a young man obsessed with building his dream house on a piece of land known as Gypsy's Acre. He falls in love with and marries Ellie Goodman, an American heiress, and they purchase Gypsy's Acre despite local superstitions and warnings.

The novel deviates from Christie's typical detective formula. While there is a death (or deaths), the focus is less on the investigation and more on the psychological exploration of Michael and the unfolding events surrounding Gypsy's Acre. The novel is known for its atmospheric setting, its unreliable narrator, and its shocking, unexpected ending that subverts many reader expectations.

Unlike many of Christie's works featuring iconic detectives like Hercule Poirot or Miss Marple, Endless Night does not include a recurring detective character. Instead, the narrative unfolds from Michael's perspective, leading the reader to piece together the truth alongside (or even ahead of) him.

Themes explored in Endless Night include obsession, wealth, class differences, superstition versus reason, and the destructive power of unchecked ambition and desire. The novel's title is taken from William Blake's poem "Auguries of Innocence," further hinting at the darker aspects of the human condition explored within the story.
