Empress Wang (Xuanzong)

Empress Wang (王皇后, personal name unknown, possibly Wang Yurong 王有容) was the first wife of Emperor Xuanzong of the Tang dynasty. She held the position of empress from 713 until her death in 724.

Empress Wang was noted for her intelligence, cultivation, and her devotion to Emperor Xuanzong, particularly during his early reign. She is often credited with providing stability and support during the turbulent period surrounding his ascension to the throne, aiding him in consolidating his power after the coup against Empress Wei. She actively participated in court matters, offering counsel and managing the imperial household efficiently.

Despite her contributions, Empress Wang failed to produce an heir. This, coupled with her increasing concern about Emperor Xuanzong's growing infatuation with Consort Wu (later Empress Wu), led to increased tension and unhappiness in the imperial household. Desperate to conceive, she reportedly engaged in superstitious practices, which were discovered and greatly displeased Emperor Xuanzong.

In 724, Empress Wang was accused of plotting against Emperor Xuanzong by Consort Wu's supporters. While the specific details of the accusations remain somewhat vague in historical accounts, the allegations led to her being stripped of her imperial title and reduced to commoner status. She died shortly thereafter, likely by suicide, in the same year.

After her death, Emperor Xuanzong expressed remorse for his treatment of Empress Wang and regretted having listened to the accusations against her. He had her buried with imperial honors and later posthumously restored her title of Empress, although she was not enshrined alongside him after his death. While respected for her early contributions to his reign, Empress Wang's legacy is often overshadowed by the powerful and influential Consort Wu (later Empress Wu).
