Abaúj (region)

Abaúj was a historic administrative county (comitatus) of the Kingdom of Hungary. Its territory lies in present-day northeastern Hungary and southeastern Slovakia.

Geography:

Abaúj covered an area roughly corresponding to the modern-day Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén county in Hungary and a smaller part of the Košice Region in Slovakia. The region is characterized by diverse landscapes, including hills, valleys, and plains. The Hernád river flows through the area.

History:

Abaúj was one of the first counties established in the Kingdom of Hungary, likely dating back to the reign of King Stephen I in the 11th century. Its administrative center was initially the castle of Abaújvár. Throughout its history, Abaúj experienced changes in its boundaries and administrative structure. It played a significant role in the medieval history of Hungary, often serving as a border region.

Following the Austro-Hungarian Compromise of 1867, Abaúj became part of Austria-Hungary. After World War I and the Treaty of Trianon in 1920, the northern part of Abaúj was ceded to Czechoslovakia (now Slovakia), while the southern part remained within Hungary. The Hungarian portion was merged with the county of Torna to form Abaúj-Torna county.

The name "Abaúj" lives on in the name of the modern Hungarian county of Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén, reflecting its historical significance. It is also found in the name of several towns and villages within the region, preserving the memory of the historical county.
