Ecobricks

Ecobricks are plastic bottles tightly packed with clean, dry, non-biodegradable waste to a set density. They serve as building blocks that can be assembled using various techniques to create structures, furniture, or other usable objects. The intention behind ecobricking is to reduce plastic waste entering landfills, incinerators, and the environment by sequestering it in a long-term, reusable form.

The process involves collecting plastic waste that is not readily recyclable or compostable, cleaning it thoroughly to remove any organic residue, drying it completely, and then manually packing it into a plastic bottle. The packing process requires significant compression to ensure the bottle is uniformly dense and rigid. Achieving the correct density is crucial for the stability and longevity of any structure built with ecobricks. Specific density targets vary, but often range around 0.33g/ml based on the bottle's volume.

Ecobricks are seen as a form of environmental activism and a practical method for managing waste at the source. By creating ecobricks, individuals and communities can take direct action to address plastic pollution and promote a circular economy approach to waste management. However, concerns remain regarding the long-term durability of ecobrick structures and the potential for plastic degradation and leaching over time, particularly in outdoor applications.
