The plot centers around four childhood friends who possess telepathic powers and reunite for their annual hunting trip in the Maine woods. The friends must use their combined abilities to stop the aliens and prevent the spread of the deadly infection.
The film explores themes of friendship, trauma, and the battle against an unseen enemy. It features elements of body horror, suspense, and science fiction. While the novel received generally positive reviews, the film adaptation was met with mixed to negative critical reception, with many critics citing a convoluted plot and uneven tone. Despite this, it has gained a cult following over the years.
The film's special effects were notable for their use of CGI to create the aliens and their destructive impact. The score was composed by James Newton Howard.
