Deluge (fireboat)

The Deluge is a historic fireboat that served the city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Constructed in 1892, it was one of the earliest purpose-built fireboats in the United States and represented a significant advancement in maritime firefighting capabilities. The Deluge was steam-powered and equipped with powerful pumps and multiple monitors (water cannons) to deliver large volumes of water to combat fires along the waterfront, in harbor facilities, and aboard vessels.

The vessel played a critical role in protecting Philadelphia's port and industrial areas for several decades. Its robust design and firefighting equipment allowed it to effectively tackle blazes that land-based fire apparatuses could not reach. The Deluge's service life extended into the mid-20th century, after which it was eventually retired. While no longer in active service, the Deluge remains a notable example of early fireboat technology and a piece of Philadelphia's maritime history.
