David McNicol (diplomat)
David McNicol (1913-1987) was an Australian diplomat who served as Ambassador to several countries, including Indonesia and the Soviet Union.
McNicol joined the Australian Department of External Affairs (later the Department of Foreign Affairs) in 1945 after serving in the Australian military during World War II. He held various positions within the Department, including postings to London, New York (at the United Nations), and Washington D.C.
His key ambassadorial roles included:
- Ambassador to Indonesia (1966-1969): A particularly challenging period given the tensions following the Gestapu affair and the transition from the Sukarno regime.
- Ambassador to Yugoslavia, Romania, and Bulgaria (1970-1973): Residing in Belgrade.
- Ambassador to the Soviet Union (1974-1977): A significant post during the Cold War.
McNicol was known for his astute political analysis and diplomatic skills, particularly in navigating complex and sensitive international relations. He retired from the Department of Foreign Affairs in 1977.
