Daljit Singh (ophthalmologist)

Daljit Singh (born 1934, died 2009) was a pioneering Indian ophthalmologist known for his contributions to the field of intraocular lens (IOL) implantation and phacoemulsification techniques. He is widely regarded as one of the first surgeons in India to successfully perform IOL implantation.

Dr. Singh graduated from the Glancy Medical College (now Government Medical College), Amritsar. He subsequently trained in ophthalmology and dedicated his career to advancing eye care in India.

His significant contributions include the development of indigenous IOL designs suitable for the Indian population and climate. He also played a key role in popularizing phacoemulsification, a minimally invasive cataract surgery technique, in India through training programs and workshops. He published extensively on his research and surgical techniques in peer-reviewed journals.

Dr. Singh received numerous awards and accolades for his contributions to ophthalmology. He is remembered for his dedication to patient care, his innovative surgical skills, and his role in transforming cataract surgery practices in India.
