Cold Heaven (film)
Cold Heaven is a 1991 psychological thriller film directed by Nicolas Roeg, based on the 1983 novel of the same name by Brian Moore. The film stars Theresa Russell, James Russo, and Mark Isham.
The story revolves around Marie Davenport (Theresa Russell), a woman unhappily married to Dr. Alex Davenport (James Russo). While on vacation in Brittany, Alex is involved in a near-fatal boating accident. Presumed dead, he is taken to a mortuary, where Marie experiences a series of strange and potentially miraculous events. Alex seemingly returns to life, but both he and Marie are profoundly changed by the experience.
The film explores themes of faith, doubt, miracles, and the complex relationship between Marie and Alex as they grapple with the aftermath of the accident and the possibility of divine intervention. Marie's inner turmoil and her struggle to understand what she witnessed form the core of the narrative. The film utilizes Roeg's signature non-linear storytelling and visual style to create a sense of disorientation and unease, reflecting Marie's psychological state.
