Chuck Templeton (baseball)
Chuck Templeton (born April 12, 1951, in Collinsville, Illinois) is a former professional baseball player. He played shortstop in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the St. Louis Cardinals (1974-1981), San Diego Padres (1982-1983), and New York Mets (1983).
Templeton was known for his switch-hitting ability and defensive prowess at shortstop. He was a three-time All-Star (1977, 1978, 1979) during his time with the Cardinals. In 1977, he became the first switch-hitter to collect 200 hits in a single season.
A key part of the Cardinals teams of the late 1970s, Templeton was traded to the San Diego Padres in December 1981, along with Sixto Lezcano, for Ozzie Smith. His career declined after the trade, and he was later traded to the New York Mets. He retired from professional baseball after the 1983 season.
After his playing career, Templeton has been involved in coaching and other baseball-related activities.
