Choc (typeface)

Choc is a display typeface designed by Roger Excoffon in 1955. It is characterized by its bold, heavy weight and somewhat irregular, hand-drawn appearance. Excoffon designed Choc for the Fonderie Olive type foundry.

Choc is often described as having a rough, almost woodcut-like quality. Its letterforms are somewhat condensed and feature angled terminals and distinctive curves. This gives it a strong personality and makes it suitable for headlines, posters, and other display uses where a bold and impactful visual statement is desired.

The typeface reflects the post-war emphasis on expressive and less formal design, and represents a break from traditional, more rigid type designs. While initially popular in France, its use spread internationally, particularly for advertising and packaging.

Choc remains a recognizable and distinctive typeface, although its widespread use has diminished somewhat over time. It is considered a classic example of mid-century modern type design. Digital versions are available, allowing it to be used in contemporary design projects. It is sometimes compared to other display faces from the same era, such as Banco and Mistral, also designed by Roger Excoffon, all sharing a bold and expressive character.
