Chief of Defence Staff (Jamaica)
The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) is the professional head of the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF). The CDS is the highest-ranking military officer in Jamaica and is responsible for the command, control, and administration of the JDF. The position is appointed by the Governor-General of Jamaica, acting on the advice of the Prime Minister.
The CDS advises the Minister of National Security and the government on all matters pertaining to military policy, strategy, and operations. They oversee the JDF's various branches, including the army, air wing, coast guard, and support units. Responsibilities include maintaining the operational readiness of the JDF, coordinating military exercises, and ensuring the security of Jamaica's borders and maritime space. The CDS also plays a role in national disaster relief efforts and other civil support operations.
The appointment and powers of the CDS are governed by the Defence Act and other relevant legislation of Jamaica.
