Charles Miles (general)

Charles Miles (1859 – 1942) was a United States Army officer who served in the Spanish–American War, the Philippine–American War, and World War I. He attained the rank of major general.

Miles was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1882 and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the 5th Infantry Regiment.

He served in various assignments throughout the American West during the Indian Wars before seeing combat in Cuba during the Spanish-American War. He also served in the Philippines during the Philippine-American War, participating in campaigns against Filipino insurgents.

During World War I, Miles served in France as the Chief of Staff of the American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) Service of Supply. He was responsible for managing the logistical support for the AEF, a crucial role in ensuring the success of American military operations.

After the war, Miles served as the Deputy Chief of Staff of the Army. He retired from the Army in 1923. He died in Washington, D.C., in 1942 and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.

His awards include the Distinguished Service Medal for his service in World War I. He is considered a capable staff officer whose organizational skills contributed significantly to the American war effort in both the Philippines and France.
