Charles Augustus, Hereditary Grand Duke of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach (1912–1988)

Charles Augustus of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach (Charles Augustus William Ernest Frederick George Louis Hubertus; born 28 July 1912 in Schloss Belvedere, Weimar; died 14 October 1988 in Schomberg, Upper Bavaria) was the Hereditary Grand Duke of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach from his birth until the abolition of the German monarchies in 1918. He was the eldest son of William Ernest, Grand Duke of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach and Princess Feodora of Saxe-Meiningen.

Following the end of World War I and the subsequent deposition of his father, Charles Augustus and his family lost their titles and privileges. Despite this, they remained a prominent family within the region. He remained head of the House of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach from his father's death in 1923 until his own death in 1988.

He married Baroness Elisabeth of Wangenheim-Winterstein on 5 October 1944 in Schloss Ettersburg. They had three children: Princess Elisabeth of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach (born 1945), Michael, Prince of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach (1946-2021), and Princess Beatrice of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach (born 1948).

Charles Augustus lived through significant periods of German history, including the Weimar Republic, the Third Reich, and post-war divided Germany. He witnessed the transformation of his ancestral lands and played a role, albeit a largely symbolic one after 1918, in maintaining the legacy of the House of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach. His son, Michael, succeeded him as head of the family.
