Chaffee (crater)

Chaffee is a lunar impact crater located on the far side of the Moon. It lies to the east of the huge walled plain Apollo, and southwest of the crater Borman.

This crater is a relatively well-formed feature, with a sharp, well-defined rim that has suffered only minor wear. The inner walls display some terracing, particularly along the western side. The interior floor is relatively level, and has a central peak that is slightly offset to the west of the midpoint.

Chaffee lies within the South Pole-Aitken basin, one of the largest known impact craters in the Solar System.

The crater is named in honor of Roger B. Chaffee, an American astronaut who died in the Apollo 1 fire in 1967. The name was officially adopted by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) in 1970. Adjacent craters have also been named after the other two Apollo 1 astronauts, Grissom and White.
