Carinish

Carinish is a village and township on the island of North Uist in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland. It lies on the east coast of the island, facing the Sound of Harris.

The name Carinish is derived from the Gaelic "Càirinis", the meaning of which is debated. Some sources suggest it means "cairn promontory" or "place of the cairn", referring to a possible ancient burial cairn in the area. Others interpret it as "narrow place".

Historically, Carinish was a significant ferry port, connecting North Uist with the Isle of Harris. The ferry terminal has since moved to Leverburgh on Harris and Berneray on North Uist, but Carinish remains an important community hub.

The village features a shop, post office, and community hall. Carinish also gives its name to the nearby Carinish Stone Circle, a prehistoric monument of unknown purpose. The surrounding area is primarily agricultural, with crofting being a traditional way of life. The landscape is characterized by machair grasslands, lochs, and the distinctive rocky coastline of the Outer Hebrides.
