Boog Powell (outfielder)
Boog Powell (born John Wesley Powell on August 17, 1941) is a former Major League Baseball left fielder and designated hitter. He played primarily for the Baltimore Orioles (1961-1974), also playing for the Cleveland Indians (1975-1976) and Los Angeles Dodgers (1977).
Powell was a powerful hitter known for his prodigious home runs and large physique. He was a four-time All-Star (1968, 1969, 1970, 1972) and won the American League Most Valuable Player Award in 1970. He was a key member of the Orioles teams that won four American League pennants (1966, 1969, 1970, 1971) and two World Series championships (1966, 1970).
His nickname, "Boog," originated in his childhood. It's commonly attributed to a shortened version of "Booger," but the exact reason is debated.
Powell's career statistics include 339 home runs, 1,144 RBIs, and a .266 batting average. After his playing career, he has been involved in various business ventures, including marketing a line of barbecue sauces and spices. He remains a popular figure in Baltimore and is often seen at Orioles games.
