Black Sea (film)
Black Sea is a 2014 submarine thriller film directed by Kevin Macdonald, written by Dennis Kelly, and starring Jude Law, Scoot McNairy, Ben Mendelsohn, and Grigoriy Dobrygin.
The film centers on a disgruntled submarine captain, Robinson (Law), who is made redundant by his employer. Desperate for money, he is convinced to lead a dangerous and illegal treasure hunt to recover a Nazi U-boat rumored to be laden with gold, which sank to the bottom of the Black Sea during World War II. He assembles a mixed crew of British and Russian sailors, who are equally desperate and volatile.
The mission quickly descends into chaos and mistrust as the crew becomes increasingly paranoid and greedy. As tensions rise and the confined space of the submarine intensifies their conflicts, the hunt for gold becomes a struggle for survival. The dangers of the deep, coupled with the crew's internal conflicts, threaten to destroy them all before they can reach their objective.
The film explores themes of greed, desperation, class conflict, and the psychological effects of confinement and isolation. It was released in the United Kingdom on December 5, 2014, and in the United States on January 23, 2015.
