Bitter Sweet (1940 film)
Bitter Sweet is a 1940 American Technicolor musical film directed by W. S. Van Dyke, based on the 1929 operetta of the same name by Noël Coward. It was nominated for two Academy Awards: Best Cinematography (Color) and Best Interior Decoration.
The film stars Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy, and tells the story of Sari Linden, a young Englishwoman who elopes to Vienna with her music teacher in the early 20th century. They face hardship and tragedy but find love and fulfillment in their unconventional life. The story explores themes of love, duty, and the sacrifices one makes for personal happiness. The film features several well-known songs from the operetta, including "I'll See You Again." While generally well-received, the film takes liberties with the original operetta's plot and characterizations.
