Big Sur

Big Sur is a rugged and mountainous section of the Central Coast of California where the Santa Lucia Mountains rise abruptly from the Pacific Ocean. It is located approximately 90 miles (145 km) south of San Francisco and 245 miles (394 km) north of Los Angeles, along Highway 1. Big Sur is not a city, but rather a sparsely populated region extending roughly from the Carmel River south to the San Carpóforo Creek.

The area is renowned for its dramatic scenery, including redwood forests, rocky coastline, and sweeping ocean vistas. Key features include the Bixby Creek Bridge, Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park, and the Point Sur State Historic Park.

Big Sur’s history includes indigenous peoples, primarily the Esselen, Salinan, and Ohlone tribes. European exploration began in the 16th century, but the region remained relatively isolated until the construction of Highway 1 in the 1930s.

Economically, tourism is a major driver, with visitors drawn to the natural beauty, hiking trails, and scenic drives. Conservation and preservation efforts are significant due to the ecological sensitivity of the area.
