Big Air
Big Air is a freestyle snowboarding and freeskiing event where athletes perform a single trick off a massive jump. The jump, or "kicker," is engineered to provide significant height and distance, allowing riders to execute complex aerial maneuvers, often involving rotations, flips, and grabs.
The core of Big Air competition involves athletes taking a single run at the jump and performing their best trick. Judges evaluate the trick based on several criteria, including amplitude (height), technical difficulty, execution, landing, and overall style. The athlete with the highest score, or aggregate of scores over multiple rounds, wins.
Big Air is a visually spectacular event, known for its dramatic displays of athleticism and innovation. The tricks performed are often at the cutting edge of what's possible in freestyle snow sports, pushing the boundaries of aerial acrobatics.
The event has gained significant popularity and is featured in major competitions worldwide, including the X Games and the Winter Olympic Games. Its inclusion in the Olympics has further solidified its status as a premier discipline in freestyle snow sports.
Different variations of Big Air exist, including snowboard Big Air and freeski (ski) Big Air, each with its own unique characteristics and athletes. While the fundamental concept remains the same, the tricks and styles differ between the two disciplines.
