Bengkulu

Bengkulu is a province of Indonesia located on the southwestern coast of Sumatra. It borders the provinces of West Sumatra to the north, Jambi to the northeast, South Sumatra to the east, and Lampung to the southeast. The province faces the Indian Ocean to the west and south. Its capital and largest city is also named Bengkulu.

Historically, the region was under the influence of various kingdoms and sultanates before becoming a trading outpost for the British East India Company in the 17th century. It was known as British Bencoolen and remained under British control for a significant period, except for a brief period of French occupation. The British ceded Bengkulu to the Dutch in 1824 as part of the Treaty of London, in exchange for Malacca.

Bengkulu is known for its diverse landscape, including coastal plains, hills, and mountainous regions. The region is also known for its Rafflesia arnoldii, the world's largest flower, which can be found blooming in the province's forests. The economy of Bengkulu relies on agriculture, fishing, and mining, with significant production of rubber, coffee, and coal.

Culturally, Bengkulu has a distinct identity influenced by its history and geography. Traditional music, dance, and handicrafts are important aspects of the local culture.
