Assembly of the Republic (Northern Cyprus)
The Assembly of the Republic (Turkish: Cumhuriyet Meclisi) is the legislature of Northern Cyprus. It is a unicameral body consisting of 50 members, elected by proportional representation from five multi-member electoral districts: Lefkoşa, Gazimağusa, Girne, Güzelyurt, and İskele.
Elections are held every five years, although snap elections can occur. Any Northern Cypriot citizen who is at least 25 years old is eligible to stand for election. The electoral system requires parties to surpass a minimum threshold of 5% of the total vote to gain representation in the Assembly.
The main functions of the Assembly include enacting laws, approving budgets, ratifying treaties, and overseeing the executive branch (the Council of Ministers). It also holds the power to initiate votes of no confidence in the government. The Assembly's proceedings are conducted in Turkish.
