Andrew Ireland (footballer)
Andrew Ireland is a former Australian rules footballer who played for the Collingwood Football Club in the Victorian Football League (VFL) and later for the Brisbane Bears in the Australian Football League (AFL).
Ireland was a key defender known for his strong marking ability and intercept play. He played for Collingwood between 1976 and 1983, featuring in the 1977 VFL Grand Final against North Melbourne, which resulted in a draw and the subsequent replay that Collingwood lost.
Following his time at Collingwood, Ireland joined the Brisbane Bears in their inaugural season in 1987. He provided experience and leadership to the newly formed team, playing a significant role in establishing the club. He retired from playing in 1988.
After his playing career, Ireland transitioned into football administration. He held various positions at the Brisbane Bears/Brisbane Lions, including coaching roles and involvement in player development. He later served as the Chief Executive Officer of the Sydney Swans, a role he held for a significant period, overseeing a period of sustained success for the club including multiple premierships. He is widely regarded as a highly respected and influential figure in Australian football administration.
