Alfred Simpson (ironmaster)

Alfred Simpson (1806 – 1891) was a prominent South Australian industrialist and manufacturer, best known for establishing the company A. Simpson & Son, later Simpson Ltd., which became a leading manufacturer of iron and tinware.

Simpson was born in London, England, and emigrated to South Australia in 1849. Initially, he worked as a tinsmith and ironmonger. In 1853, he established A. Simpson & Son in Gawler Place, Adelaide. The business quickly expanded, manufacturing a range of products including safes, ovens, baths, and other household items. Simpson was innovative in adapting to the needs of the growing colony, producing goods that were often unavailable or expensive to import.

A. Simpson & Son was known for its quality and durability, and the company's products became ubiquitous in South Australian homes and businesses. The firm was also involved in the production of agricultural machinery and equipment.

Simpson played an active role in the South Australian community, serving on the Adelaide City Council and supporting various charitable organizations. He retired from active management of the business in the 1880s, passing it on to his sons. His legacy continues through the Simpson brand, which remains associated with durable household goods.
