Alexander Macdonell (bishop of Kingston)

Alexander Macdonell (1762-1840), also known as "Scotus", was the first Roman Catholic Bishop of Kingston, Upper Canada. Born in Glen Urquhart, Scotland, he played a prominent role in the resettlement and support of displaced Highland Scots Catholics, particularly after the Highland Clearances.

Macdonell was ordained a priest in 1787 and served in Scotland before emigrating to British North America in 1804. He initially settled in Glengarry County, Upper Canada, where he ministered to a large community of Scottish Catholics. He worked tirelessly to provide them with spiritual guidance, education, and economic opportunities.

During the War of 1812, Macdonell raised and led the Glengarry Light Infantry Fencibles, a militia unit composed largely of Scottish settlers. His loyalty and leadership were highly valued by the British authorities.

In 1826, Macdonell was appointed Vicar Apostolic of Upper Canada. In 1829, the Diocese of Kingston was erected, and he became its first bishop. He dedicated the remainder of his life to establishing and strengthening the Catholic Church in Upper Canada, building churches, schools, and other institutions. He traveled extensively throughout his vast diocese, ministering to the growing Catholic population.
