Alex Young (footballer, born 1937)
Alex Young (born 13 December 1937 in Haddington, East Lothian, Scotland, died 27 February 2017) was a Scottish professional footballer, most famous for his time as a centre-forward for Everton in the 1960s.
Young began his career with Newtongrange Star before moving to Hearts in 1955. He was part of the Hearts team that won the Scottish Cup in 1956 and the Scottish League Championship in 1957 and 1958.
In November 1960, Young signed for Everton for a then club-record fee of £42,000. He quickly established himself as a key player for the Toffees, becoming renowned for his elegant style, heading ability, and goalscoring prowess. At Everton, he earned the nickname "The Golden Vision" due to his graceful play and ability to anticipate and execute plays.
Young was instrumental in Everton winning the First Division title in the 1962–63 season. He was also part of the Everton team that reached the FA Cup Final in 1968, losing to West Bromwich Albion. He scored 87 league goals for Everton in 231 appearances.
After leaving Everton in 1968, Young joined Glentoran in Northern Ireland before retiring from professional football. He later returned to Scotland and worked outside of football.
Alex Young was inducted into the Scottish Football Hall of Fame in 2015. He is remembered as one of Everton's greatest ever players and a key figure in Scottish football during the 1950s and 1960s.
