Ageing (textiles)
Ageing in the context of textiles refers to a controlled process of exposing dyed or printed fabrics to moist heat or steam to set the dyestuff and improve its fastness properties. It's a critical step, particularly in processes like printing with reactive dyes, where the dye needs to chemically react with the fiber for permanent fixation. Ageing facilitates this reaction, leading to improved color intensity, wash fastness, and rub fastness. The specific temperature, humidity, and duration of the ageing process vary depending on the type of dye, fiber, and desired outcome. Insufficient ageing can result in poor color retention and bleeding of dyes during subsequent washing or use. Conversely, over-ageing can damage the fabric or alter the color shade.
