Aetna

Aetna was a major American managed health care company that sold health insurance and related services, such as dental, pharmaceutical, and mental health plans. It was acquired by CVS Health in November 2018 and now operates as a subsidiary of CVS Health.

Historically, Aetna had its roots in fire insurance, having been founded in Hartford, Connecticut in 1853 as Aetna Life Insurance Company. The name "Aetna" was chosen in homage to Mount Etna, an active volcano in Sicily, Italy, as a symbol of strength and resilience, reflecting the company's initial focus on fire risks.

Over time, Aetna shifted its focus to health insurance, becoming one of the largest players in the U.S. health insurance market. Prior to its acquisition, Aetna offered a wide range of products, including commercial health plans, Medicare, Medicaid, and international health benefits.

Aetna's headquarters remained in Hartford, Connecticut, for much of its history, a testament to its long-standing presence in the city's insurance industry. While the Aetna name continues to exist, the company's operations and strategic direction are now integrated with CVS Health.
