ARKive
ARKive (stylized as ARKive) was a global initiative with the mission of promoting the conservation of the world's threatened species through the power of wildlife imagery. It was an online library of digitized films, photographs and audio recordings of animals, plants and fungi. The project aimed to create a comprehensive visual record of life on Earth for the benefit of conservation, education, and public awareness.
Launched in 2003 by the Wildscreen conservation charity, ARKive worked with leading conservation organizations, museums, and individual contributors to collect and curate its extensive media collection. Its online database contained multimedia profiles of tens of thousands of species, making it a valuable resource for researchers, educators, and anyone interested in biodiversity.
ARKive's media was freely available for non-commercial use, allowing it to reach a wide audience and support conservation efforts worldwide. The project aimed to inspire action by showcasing the beauty and fragility of the natural world.
The ARKive website was decommissioned in 2019. Its content was transferred to other online repositories, including the Biodiversity Heritage Library and Internet Archive, ensuring that the wealth of information and imagery remained accessible. While the ARKive website is no longer active, its legacy continues to contribute to global conservation efforts.
