ALCO RS-1

The ALCO RS-1 was a diesel-electric locomotive built by the American Locomotive Company (ALCO). It was part of ALCO's "Road Switcher" line, designed to be versatile enough for both road freight and switching duties. RS-1 locomotives were produced from 1941 to 1953.

The RS-1 was powered by an ALCO 539T six-cylinder, inline, four-stroke diesel engine, which produced 1,000 horsepower. It typically featured an AAR wheel arrangement of B-B (meaning it had two two-axle trucks, both powered). The locomotive was known for its reliability and long service life, making it a popular choice for railroads across North America.

Key characteristics of the RS-1 included its distinctive high hood, which housed the engine and other mechanical components. This design offered good visibility for the crew during switching operations. The RS-1 played a significant role in the transition from steam to diesel power on many railroads.

The RS-1 saw service on a wide variety of railroads, ranging from large Class I lines to smaller short lines. Many examples continued to operate for decades after their initial purchase, and some have been preserved in museums and on tourist railroads. The RS-1 represents a significant milestone in diesel locomotive development and contributed significantly to the modernization of rail transport.
