5th Military Region (Vietnam People's Army)
The 5th Military Region (MR5) is one of the ten military regions of the Vietnam People's Army (VPA). It is responsible for defending the central coast and Central Highlands regions of Vietnam. Its headquarters are located in Da Nang.
MR5 is responsible for a large geographical area that includes several provinces, necessitating a complex organizational structure to effectively manage its security and defense responsibilities. The Military Region operates under the direct command of the Ministry of National Defence (MND) and the General Staff of the VPA. Its main functions include:
- Territorial Defense: Maintaining the combat readiness of forces within its area of responsibility to deter and respond to any potential threats.
- Maintaining Social Order: Assisting local authorities in maintaining public order, preventing crime, and responding to natural disasters.
- Military Training: Conducting military training and education for both regular and reserve forces.
- Mobilization: Preparing and executing mobilization plans to augment the regular forces with reserve personnel in times of emergency.
- Economic Development: Participating in socio-economic development projects in coordination with civilian authorities.
MR5's area of responsibility has historically been a strategically important region, playing a significant role during the Vietnam War. The region's mountainous terrain and coastal access present unique challenges for defense and security. MR5 maintains close coordination with local government officials and communities to ensure effective defense and development. It comprises various units, including infantry, artillery, air defense, and engineering elements, as well as local militia and self-defense forces. The command structure of MR5 includes a Commander and Political Commissar, reflecting the VPA's emphasis on political and ideological training alongside military skills.
