2005 Birthday Honours (New Zealand)
The 2005 Birthday Honours for New Zealand were appointments made by Elizabeth II in her capacity as Queen of New Zealand on 6 June 2005. The honours were awarded to recognise services to New Zealand and its Realm.
The Birthday Honours are awarded as part of the Queen's Official Birthday celebrations and were announced in New Zealand on Queen's Birthday weekend. The recipients of honours are styled according to their honour, and post-nominal letters are used as appropriate.
The honours lists are divided into Orders, each with varying grades of membership. The primary Orders included in the New Zealand Birthday Honours are:
- The Order of New Zealand (ONZ): The highest honour in New Zealand, limited to 20 living members.
- The New Zealand Order of Merit (NZOM): Established in 1996, this order recognizes outstanding service to the Crown and nation. It has five levels: Knight or Dame Grand Companion (KNZM or DNZM), Knight or Dame Companion (KNZM or DNZM), Companion (CNZM), Officer (ONZM), and Member (MNZM).
- The Queen's Service Order (QSO): Awarded for valuable voluntary service to the community or meritorious service to the Crown.
- The Queen's Service Medal (QSM): Awarded for meritorious service to the community or the Crown.
In addition to these Orders, appointments could be made to the ranks of:
- Honorary Appointments: For individuals who are not citizens of New Zealand or a Realm country but have rendered significant service.
The specific recipients of the 2005 Birthday Honours are publicly available and documented in the New Zealand Gazette, the official government publication. Details of their citations explaining the basis for their honour are also usually available. These honours reflect a wide range of contributions to New Zealand society, including public service, community work, arts and culture, business, and sports.
