1962 FIFA World Cup qualification (AFC)
The 1962 FIFA World Cup qualification (AFC) determined the single Asian Football Confederation (AFC) representative at the 1962 FIFA World Cup, held in Chile. The process involved four teams: South Korea, Japan, Indonesia, and Burma (now Myanmar).
The qualification format consisted of two rounds. In the first round, the four teams were divided into two groups. South Korea faced Japan, and Indonesia faced Burma. These were played as two-legged ties, with the winner of each group advancing to the final round.
In the final round, the two winners of the first round played each other in a two-legged tie. The winner of this tie qualified for the 1962 FIFA World Cup.
South Korea defeated Japan, and Indonesia defeated Burma in the first round.
In the final round, South Korea defeated Indonesia to secure their place at the 1962 FIFA World Cup. However, following protests by Indonesia regarding the officiating in the second leg, FIFA ordered a replay to be held in Kuala Lumpur. South Korea refused to participate in the replay, citing scheduling conflicts and perceived unfairness. FIFA subsequently awarded the place to Indonesia, but Indonesia withdrew shortly before the World Cup began for political reasons. As a result, no AFC team ultimately participated in the 1962 FIFA World Cup.
