10,000 Days (Tool album)
10,000 Days is the fourth studio album by the American progressive metal band Tool. Released in 2006, it is the band's first full-length album since Lateralus in 2001. The album's title, according to various interpretations by band members and fans, refers primarily to the approximate length of time that vocalist Maynard James Keenan's mother, Judith Marie, suffered paralysis following a stroke before her death in 2003. This theme of loss, mortality, and remembrance is central to the album's lyrical content.
Musically, 10,000 Days continues Tool's exploration of complex time signatures, polyrhythms, and extended instrumental sections. The album features a blend of heavy, distorted riffs, atmospheric textures, and moments of melodic beauty. Notable tracks include "Vicarious," "Jambi," "The Pot," and the two-part suite "Wings for Marie (Pt 1)" and "10,000 Days (Wings Pt 2)."
10,000 Days was released to generally positive reviews, with critics praising its musical ambition and emotional depth, although some reviewers noted its length and complexity as potential barriers to entry for casual listeners. The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart and has since been certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). The album also received a Grammy Award for Best Recording Package.
