William Morton (judge)
William Morton (1820-1885) was an American lawyer and jurist who served as a judge of the Louisiana Supreme Court from 1877 to 1880. Born in Madison County, Virginia, he graduated from the University of Virginia and was admitted to the bar in 1841. He practiced law in Virginia before moving to Louisiana in the late 1840s.
Morton held various judicial positions prior to his appointment to the Louisiana Supreme Court, including district judge. His tenure on the Supreme Court was relatively short, lasting only three years, but he participated in numerous significant decisions during that time. After leaving the court, he resumed his private legal practice. He died in New Orleans.
