USS Ozark (1863)
The USS Ozark was a single-turreted, twin-screw ironclad river monitor built for the United States Navy during the American Civil War. She was named for the Ozark Mountains.
Ordered in 1862 and launched in 1863 by the Gasconade River Packet Company of St. Louis, Missouri, the Ozark was commissioned on February 17, 1864. Designed for operations on the shallow Western rivers, she played an active role in supporting Union forces along the Mississippi River and its tributaries.
The Ozark participated in several engagements, including operations against Confederate fortifications and riverine defenses. She provided crucial fire support for land-based troops and helped maintain Union control of key waterways. Her shallow draft and heavy armament made her well-suited for the unique challenges of river warfare.
Following the end of the Civil War, the Ozark remained in service with the U.S. Navy. However, like many of her contemporaries, she was eventually decommissioned as the Navy transitioned to more modern vessels. She was sold in 1865.
