USS New Hampshire (1864)

The USS New Hampshire was a wooden-hulled, screw-propelled ship of the line originally commissioned as the Alabama in 1819. She was renamed New Hampshire in 1864.

Originally designed as a 74-gun warship, her construction at the Portsmouth Navy Yard was delayed significantly, and she remained on the stocks for many years. When finally completed and launched in 1864, she was outfitted with a single funnel and screw propulsion, though the exact number of guns she carried during her service varied.

The New Hampshire served primarily as a training ship and later as a receiving ship. Her roles included training naval apprentices and providing housing and administrative support for sailors awaiting assignment or discharge. She was stationed at various locations, including Newport, Rhode Island and New York.

The New Hampshire was ultimately decommissioned and sold for scrap in 1901. Her long service, despite being launched relatively late in her designed era, reflected the changing needs of the U.S. Navy in the latter half of the 19th century, transitioning from sailing warships to steam-powered vessels and adapting to the evolving requirements of naval personnel management.
