USS Fulton (AS-11)

The USS Fulton (AS-11) was a Fulton-class submarine tender that served in the United States Navy from 1940 to 1991. Named after Robert Fulton, the inventor of the first commercially successful steamboat, she was the first ship to bear this name.

Commissioned in September 1940, USS Fulton initially served in the Atlantic, providing support and maintenance to submarines operating in that theater during the early years of World War II. Later, she was transferred to the Pacific and provided crucial support for submarines operating against Japan.

Following World War II, USS Fulton continued to serve as a submarine tender, deploying to various locations and participating in numerous exercises. She provided repair, maintenance, and supply services to submarines, playing a vital role in maintaining the operational readiness of the submarine fleet.

Over the years, USS Fulton underwent several modernizations and overhauls to keep pace with technological advancements in submarine design and equipment. She remained an active member of the fleet until her decommissioning in September 1991.

After decommissioning, USS Fulton was stricken from the Naval Vessel Register and eventually sold for scrap. Her service spanned five decades, and she earned several battle stars for her service in World War II.
