USS Cates

USS Cates refers to one of two ships of the United States Navy bearing the name Cates, named in honor of Marine Corps General Clifton B. Cates:

  • USS Clifton Sprague (FFG-16): Originally named USS Cates (FFG-16), this Oliver Hazard Perry-class guided missile frigate was renamed USS Clifton Sprague on 10 May 1978, prior to its commissioning. This decision honored Rear Admiral Clifton Sprague for his bravery in the Battle off Samar during World War II. The ship was commissioned in 1980 and decommissioned in 1995.

  • There is no other USS Cates on record.
