USS Blue (DD-744)

The USS Blue (DD-744) was a United States Navy Allen M. Sumner-class destroyer. Named for Rear Admiral Victor Blue, a recipient of the Medal of Honor, she was commissioned in 1944 and served through the end of World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War.

History: USS Blue was laid down by the Bath Iron Works Corporation, Bath, Maine, on 22 November 1943, launched on 30 May 1944, sponsored by Miss Eleanor Stewart Blue, Rear Admiral Blue's daughter, and commissioned on 25 August 1944, Commander C. L. Guest in command.

Following shakedown and training exercises, USS Blue joined the Pacific Fleet. During World War II, she participated in numerous operations, including the invasion of Okinawa. After the war, she continued to serve in the Pacific, engaging in peacekeeping duties.

During the Korean War, USS Blue provided gunfire support for United Nations forces and participated in blockade operations. She patrolled the Korean coast and helped to prevent enemy supply routes.

In the Vietnam War, USS Blue served as a plane guard for aircraft carriers in the Gulf of Tonkin, patrolled the coast, and provided naval gunfire support for operations ashore.

Decommissioning and Fate: USS Blue was decommissioned in 1974. She was struck from the Naval Vessel Register in 1975 and subsequently sold for scrap.

Honors and Awards: USS Blue received numerous battle stars and awards for her service in World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War.
