Tropine
Tropine is a bicyclic organic chemical compound. It is a tropane alkaloid featuring a hydroxyl group at the 3-position. Tropine is typically found esterified as various alkaloids, most notably atropine and hyoscyamine, both of which are anticholinergic deliriants. It can be obtained by hydrolysis of these alkaloids.
Tropine is a white, crystalline solid. It is soluble in water and ethanol. It is optically inactive.
Chemically, it consists of a tropane skeleton with a hydroxyl group at the 3 position. The tropane skeleton is a bicyclic system consisting of a piperidine ring fused to a pyrrolidine ring.
Tropine serves as a precursor in the synthesis of various pharmaceuticals and other organic compounds. It is of significant interest in the fields of medicinal chemistry and organic synthesis.
