Stool (seat)
A stool is a backless and armless seat. Stools generally support a single person. Common design features include a flat surface for sitting, supported by legs or a pedestal.
Stools are differentiated from chairs primarily by the absence of a back. They may vary significantly in height and intended use. Lower stools can be used for resting the feet, while higher stools, often called bar stools, are common in bars and restaurants and provide seating at a high counter.
The materials used to construct stools are highly variable, ranging from wood and metal to plastic and upholstered fabrics. The basic design of a stool has remained relatively consistent throughout history, but modern variations may incorporate adjustable heights, swivel features, or folding capabilities for storage. Stools can be found in a wide variety of settings, including homes, offices, laboratories, and public spaces.
