Stoney & Meatloaf (band)
Stoney & Meatloaf was a Motown-influenced duo comprised of Shaun "Stoney" Murphy and Marvin Lee Aday (later known as Meat Loaf). They released one self-titled album in 1971 on the Prodigal Records label. The album featured a mix of soul, R&B, and rock music, and spawned a minor hit single, "What You See Is What You Get."
The duo formed in Detroit after Murphy and Aday met while auditioning for a role in the Detroit production of Hair. They developed a strong vocal chemistry and were signed to Motown's Rare Earth label, which subsequently formed Prodigal Records to release their music.
While Stoney & Meatloaf didn't achieve major commercial success, it helped launch Meat Loaf's career and provided Murphy with greater recognition. After the duo disbanded, Murphy went on to work as a backing vocalist for Bob Seger and Eric Clapton, among others. Meat Loaf, of course, achieved massive success with his solo album Bat Out of Hell in 1977. The Stoney & Meatloaf album remains a notable early chapter in the careers of both artists.
