Steve Bracks
Steve Bracks (born 15 October 1954) is an Australian former politician who served as the 44th Premier of Victoria, Australia, from 1999 to 2007.
Bracks led the Victorian branch of the Australian Labor Party to victory in the 1999 state election, defeating the incumbent Liberal Party government led by Jeff Kennett. His victory was considered an upset, as Kennett had been widely expected to win.
During his time as Premier, Bracks' government focused on improving education, healthcare, and infrastructure. Key initiatives included increased funding for schools and hospitals, the introduction of daylight saving year-round, and major infrastructure projects such as the expansion of Melbourne's public transport network. His government was also noted for its strong economic management.
Bracks resigned as Premier in 2007 and was succeeded by John Brumby. Since leaving politics, he has held various positions in business and community organisations, including serving as a Special Advisor to East Timor and working in the education sector. He remains a prominent figure in Victorian public life.
