Spacewar!

Spacewar! is one of the earliest known digital computer games. Created in 1962 by a group of MIT students and faculty, including Steve Russell, Martin Graetz, and Wayne Wiitanen, it is considered a seminal title in the history of video games, influencing many subsequent game designs and demonstrating the potential of interactive computing.

The game simulates a dogfight between two spaceships, "the needle" and "the wedge," in a gravity field, typically that of a star. Players control their ships using switches or buttons, allowing them to rotate, thrust, and fire torpedoes. The gravity field affects the ships' trajectories, adding a strategic element to gameplay. A hyperspace feature allows players to make a risky jump to a random location, potentially saving themselves from danger but also potentially putting them in a worse situation.

Spacewar! was originally developed on a Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) PDP-1, a minicomputer with a vector display. Because the PDP-1 was widely distributed to universities and research institutions, Spacewar! quickly spread beyond MIT, becoming a popular demonstration program and a source of inspiration for other programmers. The game's open-source nature allowed for modifications and adaptations, contributing to its longevity and influence. Although lacking commercial distribution, its importance in the development of the video game industry is undeniable.
