Smith Field (Indiana)

Smith Field is a public-use airport located three nautical miles (6 km) west of the central business district of Fort Wayne, in Allen County, Indiana, United States. It is owned by the Fort Wayne Allen County Airport Authority.

The airport primarily serves general aviation and is not served by scheduled commercial airlines. It is included in the National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems for 2021–2025, in which it is categorized as a general aviation airport.

Smith Field played a significant role in Fort Wayne's aviation history, serving as the city's main airport prior to the opening of Fort Wayne International Airport (FWA). Over time, as commercial aviation grew, Smith Field's shorter runways and limited facilities became inadequate to accommodate larger aircraft. This led to the development of FWA to handle commercial traffic. Despite the opening of FWA, Smith Field continues to operate, providing a valuable resource for private pilots, flight training, and other general aviation activities.
