Sidónio (footballer)
Sidónio Pardal da Silva, known as Sidónio (born October 19, 1935, Nazaré, Portugal – died July 11, 2012, Lisboa, Portugal), was a Portuguese professional footballer who played as a defender.
Sidónio spent the majority of his club career with Sporting CP, making over 200 appearances for the club. He was a key member of the Sporting team that won the Portuguese League title in 1957–58, 1961–62, 1965–66 and 1969–70, and the Portuguese Cup in 1962–63 and 1970–71. He also participated in European competitions with Sporting CP, reaching the semi-finals of the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1963–64.
He also played for Vitória de Setúbal before joining Sporting CP, and briefly for Atlético CP late in his career.
Sidónio earned 19 caps for the Portugal national football team between 1961 and 1969. He was part of the Portugal squad that finished third at the 1966 FIFA World Cup, playing in several matches during the tournament.
Following his retirement from playing, Sidónio remained involved in football, working as a coach at youth level.
